Ferret Vaccines

Ferrets should be vaccinated against two viruses, Canine Distemper and Rabies

Canine Distemper –-Young ferrets should be vaccinated against canine distemper 3 times at 8, 11 and 14 weeks of age and then annual boosters. Unvaccinated adult ferrets should receive 2 vaccinations 3 weeks apart and then annual boosters. Only 2 Distemper vaccines are approved for use in ferrets. We use the Purevax™ ferret vaccine from Merial. This vaccine appears to be well tolerated and cause less reactions than Fervac™ product. Because reaction can occasionly occur it is recommended that ferrets vaccinated with any vaccine stay 15-20 minutes post vaccination at the hospital in case of reaction

Rabies- Rabies Vaccine should be given at 3 months of age with an annual vaccination thereafter. Imrab-3 is the only rabies vaccine approved for ferrets. Due to the fact that Rabies is transmissible to people, Imrab-3 is the only rabies vaccine we use with ferrets. Although not required, it is recommended that ferrets vaccinated with any vaccine stay 15-20 minutes post vaccination at the hospital in case of reactions.
